Still have an old Samsung smartphone in the drawer looking for a craft project?
What bored hobbyist developers come up with to pass the time: Custom ROMs based on the latest Android 14 have recently been developed for the two 2012 smartphones Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. Officially they only got Android 4.4 KitKat from Samsung.
Custom ROMs are known as alternative Android operating systems programmed by volunteers. CyanogenMod was very popular, but its successor has been called LineageOS for some time. The stated goal is to still equip as many old devices as possible with a current Android version.
The Galaxy S3 and Note 2’s hardware is definitely older. Still, according to the developer, Android 14 runs pretty well, though not perfectly. According to XDA user “html6405”, there are still bugs and stability issues with Bluetooth audio and encryption on phone calls. Even “random restart” can’t be ruled out. This is an alpha version, so improvements may still come, although the software requirements are fairly low.
Even if daily use is hardly possible, it can be an exciting project for hobbyists to revive old smartphones. If you want to give it a try, you can find all the information on XDA Developers here Galaxy S3 And here’s to that Galaxy Note 2.
