Google took its first big step into AI with the Pixel 8 and aggressively advertised its smartphones as AI devices for the first time. But many functions are actually performed in the cloud. Things are supposed to get better when the Pixel 9 series arrives. A look at the latest source codes already reveals more about what Google is planning for the Pixel 9 series.
The text modules for “Text to Image” suggest that Google will soon provide an image generator to Pixel smartphones. The user enters a text with their wishes and the AI generates the appropriate image. So far you can only have AI-generated wallpapers on a Pixel phone, but there will be more soon
On-device AI primarily processes text and images
But according to code researcher AssembleDebug, it will also be possible to answer complex questions directly on future devices based on source code components. Currently everything is still running in the cloud, which requires more resources and delays. The company now aims to compute more AI functions on mobile devices.
There are also plans to create complex auto-reply suggestions. Currently, the answer suggestions for WhatsApp and Co. are quite short and simple AI will be able to better process incoming text and optimize text recognition. It turns out that AI can interpret images and summarize PDFs to a few points.
At this point we can’t say what’s limited to the Pixel 9 Pro and what could end up in the all-new model and Pixel 8 series. We’ll likely find out in October when the new hardware and software actually launches. However, we expect its first official appearance in May at Google I/O.
