Starting at 10am PT (5pm GMT), Apple is livestreaming its latest virtual product-announcement event under the tagline ‘Hi, Speed.’ There are plenty of rumors flying around about what new announcements to expect, but one thing that seems all-but-clear from the event’s tagline is that we can expect faster — presumably 5G — iPhones from the Cupertino company.
iPhone 12
Apple has introduced the iPhone 12, the latest smartphone from Apple and the first to feature 5G connectivity.
The new iPhone 12 is constructed of aluminum and features a 6.1” Super Retina XDR OLED display. Despite having the same display size as the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 is has smaller bezels and a more compact frame that results in the device being 11% thinner, having 15% less volume and weighing 16% less.
Apple says the Super Retina XDR Display offers a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 and has twice the number of pixels as the iPhone 11 at 460ppi. The screen can achieve 1,200 nit and is rated to display Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG content.

Apple is using a new display protection technology it calls ‘Ceramic Shield.’ According to apple, it’s the toughest smartphone glass to date with four times the drop performance of competing products.
On the camera front, the iPhone 12 has a new 12-megapixel wide-angle camera that uses a seven-element lens with a large F1.6 aperture. Apple says the new camera module offers a 27% improvement in low-light scenes and a new computational photography-driven HDR3 technology that will result in more details in both highlights and shadows. Night Mode has also been improved and is available for all cameras on the iPhone 12, including the front-facing facing.
Apple didn’t elaborate much on the video capabilities of the iPhone 12 other than to say it offers the ‘highest quality video of any smartphone.’ Apple has added a new Night Mode time-lapse capture option.
Apple has also improved the wireless charging capabilities in the iPhone 12 with its revitalized ‘MagSafe for iPhone.’ This new feature uses magnets to align the Qi-compatible charging connection on the back of the device to ensure you never accidentally put your phone in a position where it isn’t charging. These internal magnets can also be used to connect accessories, such as a magnetic wallet and other third-party options.
iPhone 12 Mini
In a Bond-esque reveal, Apple also showed off the iPhone 12 Mini. This smaller device features all of the same features of the iPhone 12, but shrinks the display to just 5.4”, making it the ‘smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G phone in the world.
