Japanese operator SoftBank has announced that it has opened a 5G Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) site in the Kanto region and has begun nationwide deployment of MEC servers in Japan this month.
SoftBank noted that its 5G MEC 5G SA provides a low latency and secure service experience using commercial services.
The operator added that its 5G MEC offer now makes it possible for customers to experience high-speed services by placing applications near user devices within the 5G SA network, which significantly reduces server access time.
SoftBank’s 5G MEC platform provides a Kubernetes-based container environment, a real standard for application development. From physical infrastructure setup to application deployment and distribution, 5G MEC sites are automated. Such features make applications on the 5G MEC platform more error-tolerant and enable faster service rollout with less complexity, for a variety of industrial services such as emergency notification, in-building IoT-based network installations, factory automation, multi-user network gaming and Automatic driving, among others

The Japanese carrier noted that the most important features of 5G SA networks are their network slicing and ability to deliver private 5G networks, which are customized networks to suit the needs of individual enterprises and other connectivity features based on advanced technology.
SoftBank initially launched commercial 5G services in Japan in March 2020 through NSA Architecture.
