Intel announced earlier this week that it would stop manufacturing embedded and upgradeable NUC PCs, but now Asus is building and developing future NUC systems instead. While Intel will no longer make the cute little form factor PCs, Asus will have a non-exclusive license to design Intel’s NUC (Next Unit of Computing) products.
“As we focus our strategy on enabling ecosystem partners to continue to innovate and grow NUC Systems’ products, our priority is to ensure a smooth transition for our customers and partners.” Sing Sagat Sam, General Manager, Intel Client Platform Solutions. “I look forward to continuing to provide exceptional products and customer support for ASUS NUC systems.”
Asus will now be able to manufacture and sell 10th to 13th generation NUC systems and even develop future designs based on upcoming Intel chips. Asus will take over support for the NUC system and create its own Asus NUC business unit. Since the NUC license is non-exclusive, Intel may license out the NUC to other PC manufacturers in the future.
However, many in the PC building and gaming community will be happy to know that the NUC hasn’t been discontinued after all. Although Intel NUC computers have always been difficult to purchase, they have played an important role in popularizing mini PCs and providing a way for many to start building a mini PC.
