Historical maps are a new variation of random maps. Randomly generated for endless replay, but with a unique purpose for each map, based on some memorable conflicts of the European continent.

New small civilization – European royal house
With the introduction of more than 30 new European maps, 9 new mini-civilizations enter the game, adding an arsenal of unique new units, technologies and abilities.
Representing larger entities whose influence transcended national boundaries rather than individuals, European royal houses thematically blurred the lines between major and minor civilizations. Age of Empire III: Specific Edition. To ally with them, such as the Native American Settlement, the Asian Holy Sites, and the African Kingdom, a trading post must be created in the palaces of the European Royal House. The Royal Houses have a unique capability and provide on average more units and technologies than other small civilizations, but they are stagnant in multiple eras as they are not available in the search era. These resources are quite effective and units often use fancy mechanics – such as unit propagation, charged action, (dis) mounting and damage reflection – but at a higher cost than their counterparts.
