Is there a new number 1 in our smartphones? Apple seems capable of replacing Samsung.
There have been repeated warnings in recent years that Apple’s long-term dominance of the smartphone market is under threat. Younger buyers (Gen Z) in particular in Western markets almost exclusively use the iPhone. The smartphone market underlines this in 2023, as there is a new number 1 after 13 years.
IDC It released its preliminary figures for 2023 and analysis showed that Apple was able to sell more smartphones than Samsung with around 234 million units. South Koreans have 226 million units. Significantly less than in 2022, when there were 262 million.
The bottom line is that Apple seems to be in the lead, as the company has managed to record slight growth compared to its direct competitors, while Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo are in the red. Transtion sells budget smartphones in Africa and is growing impressively there as well. But overall the market fell by 3.2 percent.
The last quarter of the year was particularly bad for Samsung. When it comes to Black Friday and Christmas, all manufacturers except Samsung recorded growth.
