Earlier today, the nominees for the 2025 Oscars were announced among the films vying for one of these statues. While it’s true that this isn’t the first time the Academy has recognized a transgender person, as Angela Morley, Anohni and Yance Ford have also enjoyed it, Gascon’s work is first in the performance department.
Let’s remember that the Academy has awarded cisgender actors for portraying transgender people in the past, so Gascon’s recognition is something many celebrated. On the one hand, it’s nice to see the Academy giving a transgender actress a prominent place. However, reviews related to this interpretation and the film in general were not quite positive. At the end of the day, Demi Moore will probably win in this category.
