Santa 1000A Finnish filmmaker best known for his black and white film, SantaColor 100, has released a new color negative film stock designed primarily for aerial surveillance photography.
Although Santa 1000 has not released its supplier, it says the film was made in the United States and has limited sales. Kodak Aerocolor 125. As its name implies, SantaColor 100 is an ISO 100 color negative film that is compatible with standard C41 processing. Santa 1000 says the film has ‘very accurate color and exceptionally fine gran and detail’ with the ability to push up to 800 ISO at the expense of further contrast.
The Santa 1000 offers three reasons why this film was not previously available in the standard 35mm roll. First, the film has a thinner base than usual, for which it needs to be rolled by hand into separate spools. As you can imagine, this means an increase in labor costs and extra time compared to other film stocks that can be spooled by machines. Second, the minimum order is ‘about 15,000 rolls’, which is probably quite a bit for a particular film stock. Finally, due to the cost involved, cheap color negative film stock is always available.
Why Santa 1000 is jumping on the bandwagon to turn it into a static-based film stock, the company says:
‘[We’re doing it] Because we care about the community and therefore about the availability of color film. For any film photography to thrive and grow, we need color film – and the big producers are really struggling to keep it on canister. We know it sounds like a clich, but we’re here to help the community. “
Santa 1000 notes that the film stock they will use for ordering this batch should be financed at Kickstarter, it was ‘newly created in 2022’ and was spooled by hand in Finland. Canisters are not DX coded, but as the Santa 1000 Note, most DX readers default to ISO 100, so it should be usable on most point-and-shoot film cameras.
Above you will see three push levels: +0 (100 ISO), +2 (400 ISO) and +3 (800 ISO). The contrast has increased somewhat, but the colors remain accurate. Caption and photo: Santa 1000 |
Due to the thin, clean base used for this film, the Santa 1000 recommends loading the film indoors, as loading it in direct sunlight can cause light leaks in the first few frames. This unique base can make scanning a bit more complicated, as some scanners try to correct for the density of the base and make the scanned images look more red than they should be. Although as a Santa 1000 note, most professional labs will be able to account for and correct this.

For the hand-spooling of this film, the Santa 1000 Note will roll all these rolls into reusable containers. They claim that ‘this could mean a quality problem,’ but their rolls can be replaced if anyone feels serious light leaks or other spooling issues.
