Pixel Call Assist is one of Google’s signature phone features and the company is actively working on it Beta testing New touch screen feature.
This beta has gone under the radar yesterday, as Google will announce in mid-May. There are two aspects to this call screen beta, starting with the Settings UI update. At the end of the month, users first noticed simplified call screen settings. Since then, new “security layer” options have been widely introduced:
- MAX: Unknown number screening and spam rejection
- Moderator: Check suspicious calls and reject spam
- Simple: Reject only known spam
Simplicity seems to be Google’s intention behind this change, but some prefer the previous level of detail.
Meanwhile, the big change to the Pixel Call screen as part of this beta is “a set of more natural voice prompts to identify who’s calling and why.”
Google is testing it with some owners of the Pixel 6 and newer devices in the US. Obviously the tensor is required and indicates that the device is using AI. The goal is to “enhance call screen features and reduce robocalls, giving you time and security.”

The company concluded by saying that it “looks forward to sharing more about our work on this project in the coming months.”
It comes as Google teased in April that it would “advance” the Pixel call screen this year with “multi-tiered, multi-role conversational AI.”
…a future where you never have to worry about your phone ringing again. There should always be a moment when you assume it’s something important or funny. Nothing should bother you. At the same time, you will never feel ineffective or unproductive on any call.
We thought it would involve large language models (LLMs) and could be timed with the Pixel 8. However, the beta formulation suggests that older Tensor hardware will also benefit.
