The new Pixel 8 smartphone is finally official. The last open question has now been clarified.
October is just a few days old and that means the presentation of new devices at Google. They are staying true to themselves and launching two new Pixel smartphones. The base again consists of the smaller Pixel 8 with a dual camera and the larger Pixel 8 Pro with a triple camera and other benefits.
AI extends Camera and Google Photos
The focus is on AI and there are few innovations. The basis is the new camera sensor and it makes Video Night Mode and Video Boost possible. Google allows photos at full 50 MP resolution for the first time with Pro mode (ISO, focus, etc. manually) on the Pixel 8 Pro. The ultra-wide-angle camera’s macro capabilities are now also available on the Pixel 8.
The new Magic Editor in Google Photos is definitely powerful; It was already announced in the spring. But later the new feature of being able to swap faces in group photos makes Google Photos even more powerful on Pixel phones. The new Audio Magic Eraser can filter annoying background noise from videos.
New camera sensor, new display
The main camera sensor is being revamped (Samsung GN2) and the image sensor for ultra wide angle on the Pixel 8 Pro has changed from 12 to 48 MP. The biggest highlight for me, however, is the use of the new display which is remarkably bright and easy to read outdoors. Pixel 8 Pro has an extra bright LTPO panel (1-120 Hz) and now without curved sides.
And as already known, the new Pixel 8 Pro has a thermometer on the back. Google says you can use it to measure your own body temperature, but also other things like your baby’s bottle. This is odd and remains so because no other “normal” manufacturer offers such a feature.
Tensor G3: Significantly more machine learning directly on the device
Last but not least, there’s the Tensor G3, which has double the machine learning performance of the Pixel 6. Google has improved functions like Call Screen to make it easier to detect spam Language models have also been revamped of course. With the touch of a button, your Pixel phone, for example, can read you a summary of an article. In general, the performance of AI and ML functions will be faster.
Google is making the new models smaller, ditching the curved display on the Pro, introducing new colors, vastly improving the update guarantee and integrating a slightly larger battery. All in all, almost everything has improved. The charging speed and optical fingerprint sensor remain disappointing.
