Today when we talk about legendary studios and classic games, we usually do so with a nostalgic tone, removing all negativity and leaving room for only positives. however, Hideki Kamiya doesn’t, something he made clear when he recently recalled the eyes, A title that says a commercial failure and indicates that his team was not the best.
In a recent chat between Kamiya and Ikumi Nakamura, the two developers reminisced about their days working at Clover Studios. Thus, the problem the eyesThe last title of this group, appeared, and Kamiya admits that he wanted to build a dream team to make this project a reality, but that’s how it turned out.. Here is what he commented:
āOkami was supposed to be Clover Studios’ signature title. That’s why we wanted to build a dream team. It was supposed to be a dream team with the best personnel in every department. That was the plan, but in the end not everyone, the whole team, to be honest I thought it was weak.
It wasn’t a dream team. Inside was a very stark contrast. Of course, there were people without whom Okami would not exist. Those members glowed. Some of them actually have a stronger resonance than others I’ve worked with previously. I don’t say that as a compliment, but you [Nakamura] You certainly did. Naoki Katakai and Kenichiro Yoshimura, Sawaki Takeyasu, Mari Shimazaki, Hiroshi Yamaguchi. “I’m very grateful, but overall, it wasn’t a dream team.”
After several games in the Viewtiful Joe series, the eyes It was positioned as one of the studio’s most ambitious projects. however, The end result was a commercial failure.Which Kamiya laments:
“Even Okami, produced 150,000 units? The initial shipment was 90,000. It was a colossal failure. “If it had been successful, Clover probably would have continued.”
After failure the eyesClover Studio still gave us hand of god The same year, which also failed to meet Capcom’s expectations. Thus, the study ended in a way that Kamiya and everyone involved must have regretted. However, as we already know, It didn’t end here, as Platinum Games emerged from the ashes of this group. In related matters, Kamiya talks about the future of Okami and Beautiful Joe.
Author’s Note:
Interesting to hear Kamiya’s point of view. Today, we all point to this title as one of the best of its generation, and a cult classic that we’ve all played. However, it seems that Kamiya is still stuck in the past, and doesn’t see this title from his perspective today, but as the failure it was at the time.
