Comes with one of the most distinctive and memorable aircraft in history Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Today we are delighted to launch the fourth aircraft Microsoft Flight Simulator “Local Legends” Series, S.55. The “Local Legends” series celebrates the history of aviation, and this aircraft, a twin-engine flying boat produced by Italian aircraft manufacturer Savoie-Marchetti in Milan, is linked to our recent World Update IX: Italy and Malta. It has a catamaran hull design, twin tail boom, triple vertical stabilizer and a tractor-pusher engine-propulsion system mounted on its main wing. Mainly made of wood, the cockpit of the hydroplane is located in the middle of the front of the main wing and its hulls can be configured to carry many fuels, passengers and cargo.
Savoie-Marchetti had the unique idea of performing a military role during the Cold War, initially hanging below the midline of the main wing between the two hulls of a torpedo bomber, its payload (which may also include bombs). The premise was that the S.55 could wait at sea and observe an area approaching the ship, then launch and attack. The hydroplane first thundered in the sky in August 1924. Although the Italian military initially denied the idea, they took the flying boat into service in 1926. The aircraft was briefly engaged in combat (during the Spanish Civil War), but its lasting legacy is its operation as a preferred aircraft for many long-haul flights, especially trans-Atlantic travel.
This prototype version of the S.55, Jahú was flown by Brazilian pilot Joao Ribeiro de Barros, completing an incredible voyage from Genoa, Italy, to Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1927. The inspirational journey was marked for the first time by the pilots who came from there. The Western Hemisphere has completed a trans-Atlantic flight. Zahu is the latest surviving Savoia-Marchetti S.55 and is on display at the TAM Museum in Sao Carlos, Brazil.
This version of the S.55 features the Twin V-12 510-horsepower Isota Fraschini water-cooled engine, in a tractor-pusher configuration, rotating two blade wooden drivers in each, providing a cruise of about 110 miles per hour.
S.55X
This model, the S.55X, since 1933, represents the final and most advanced iteration of the produced airframe. Only 25 were built. An 800-horsepower Isotta Fraschini W-18 engine powered by a three-blade metal propeller and advanced machinery, the S.55X boasts the highest performance and greatest range of all S.55 variants.
Shortly after their completion, all 25 ‘X’ models participated in a mass trans-Atlantic formation flight, known as the “Descendant Air Cruise” led by General Italo Balbo of the Regia Arontica (Italian Royal Air Force). The flight from Rome to Chicago in the 1933 Century of Progress World Fair is one of the greatest success stories in the history of aviation. It demonstrates the quality of design and craftsmanship of the S.55X, the courage and skill of Italian pilots, and the fact that trans-Atlantic passenger service was possible by air.
The Savoia-Marchetti S.55 and S.55X are available as a package Microsoft Flight Simulator In-SIM Marketplace today at. 14.99. We will launch the “Local Legends” series in the coming months The sky is calling!
