The kitchen is the busiest place in any home, so it means that you want to make sure that it is working as hard for you as you are in the space. One way you can make your space smarter and more efficient is to consider a smart call. Why? In two words: voice control.
I got a chance to test the U with the Moen Smart Kitchen Call, and this smart tap, combined with an Amazon or Google smart speaker, lets you do things like asking for precise measurements of water, specific temperatures, or a combination of each.

What is U by Moen Smart Call?
U by Moin Smart Call is a smart, Wi-Fi-connected call that provides touchless control. I can say “Hey Alexa, ask Moen for a cup of hot water”, and the tap gives me the exact measurement and temperature.
This is convenient for precise baking, you can easily fill a kettle, a baby bottle or a dog dish without running the tap for too long. This reduces water wastage and you have to stand there to hold the thing, waiting for the water to get hot and full.
Installation and power
There is one very important consideration you need to know about this tap: it needs power You can use a battery (six D-cells) or an optional AC adapter that you can buy if you have an outlet near your sink. If you use the battery as your main power source, you can expect the pack to last you up to two years.
Although a DIY installation of this tap is certainly possible – and I’ve been able to install a smart tap like this before – we asked our contractor to do this for us as part of a renovation.
Set up with the app
Once the call is installed, the next step is to set up your smart using the Moin app. Create an account or log in, then press the small pinhole button in the control box below the sync to keep in pairing mode. A small LED light on the tap will light up.
Go to your phone’s Wi-Fi settings and connect to the Moen Faucet you see in your list. After seconds, a green light will confirm that you have linked.
Using U by Moen: Use of handle or motion sensor
Most basic, this call can be used with the handle. There is also a motion detector on the top curve of the handle for handle-free use. The responsiveness of the sensor is really fast, and a small LED light will show you the temperature of the water at a glance using colors (red, purple, blue).
Setting up voice control
Voice control is the main feature of this tap, but it is worth mentioning that you will need a separate digital assistant device to use it. This helps a lot if the device is close to the tap.
U by Moen works with both Google and Alexa. I have been trying to install this device for 12 months with both assistants and both work great.
What can you do with U by voice assistant and Moin?
You can use your voice assistant to turn the tap on or off. Response times are usually quick, although there is a smidge in the back.
You can ask the faucet to pour a certain amount of water or a certain temperature, for example:
- Alexa, tell Moen to turn the water on / off
- Okay, Google, ask Moen to give 1 gallon of water
- Ask Moen to pour 1 cup of cold water “
I checked the UK twice with my own measuring cups and spoons as opposed to Moen’s measurements and they were pleasantly accurate! I also checked the temperature measurement. Although this feature may be somewhat limited by how much heat your water heater allows to make water, I found that the temperature was also accurate.
The Moen app also has the ability to control the maximum temperature of your call; Ideal to prevent young hands from being scalded.
You can easily create custom preset settings for your tap and ask Google or Alexa to make a custom fill.
Creating custom presets

You can easily create custom preset settings for your tap and ask Google or Alexa to make a custom fill. I made a preset to fill the dog’s water bowl, another to fill the coffee pot, one to fill my tree watering jug and another to fill a specific filter jug.
You have the ability to customize your presets while creating them For example, with dog water, I want it to be cold, so run the water until the faucet is cool, then turn it off. I put my hand on the sensor and it will deliver just the right amount.
What is it like to use U by Moen?
When I first got this tap, we were using it constantly. My husband preferred to use the tap to distribute the right amount of water needed for his breakfast oatmeal, without taking out a measuring cup.
When I was filling a jar, I found it very easy to tell Google to make something like a brin, “pour 3 gallons of hot water.” It was also infinitely effective for baking; If I’m baking some bread, I can pour water into a mixing pot.
You can say “tell Moin to wash my hands” and it will turn on the water to wet your hands, pause for 20 seconds while you are soaping, then turn on the wash again.
Finally, you can monitor water usage through the app so you can see how much water you are using
After a while, the call came together so seamlessly in our lives that one day when I use a friend’s tap, I actually try to talk to it.
In the case of smart taps, U by Moen easily tops the pile.
Our acceptance
One year after installing it, I still like this tap. Voice control works amazingly well with Alexa and Google. I like the convenience of taking measurements or adjusting the water temperature with my voice. UT by Moen Call is also correct in my years long experience.
Is there a better option?
This is the first and only voice-controlled call I’ve reviewed, so from a hands-on perspective, I can’t draw comparisons. Nevertheless, from my research, this tap seems to be the best performance of this type of technology, made by a trusted brand, which easily puts U by Moen on top of the pile in the case of smart tap.
How long will it last?
I have been installing this tap for over a year now and any issues I have with it are more related to software than hardware (such as voice control temporarily offline). The all-metal construction feels durable and has withstood nick, pot bashing and scratching. Moen offers a limited lifetime warranty on any defective parts.
Will you buy it?
Yes. I’m really glad we’ve added a U-bye Moin call to our new kitchen. It was definitely a splurge (prices vary significantly depending on style and finish but start in the 400 range), and it won’t be for everyone, but it’s extremely convenient (and a fun dinner party trick if I’m honest) and I must I would recommend it for your developed smart home.
