A well-known developer was able to find out some more details about the camera hardware of the Pixel 7 and other devices. We summarize what’s new.
Kuba, as it’s nicknamed on Twitter, is a defining factor in the Google Pixel’s push forward. Because the software has been decisive here for years and not so much integrated hardware. Pixel 7 and Co. Its potential customers should therefore not be disappointed if Google does not integrate the latest camera hardware.
The Pixel 7 gets a better front camera
As previously hinted, the Pixel 7 will get the same front camera as the Pixel 7 Pro. It has an 11 megapixel sensor from Samsung (3J1). This will again confirm that the Pixel 7 can do 4K at 60 fps via the front camera and is Face Unlock ready.
On the back of both devices, the Samsung GN1 is installed as the main sensor and the Sony IMX381 for the ultra-wide angle, as with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
Pixel 7 Pro: The zoom camera comes from another manufacturer
By linking some key IDs to publicly available source codes, it can also be found that Google has integrated a different sensor for the zoom camera in the Pixel 7 Pro. You switch from Sony IMX586 to Samsung GM1. Technically, there should be no difference.
So why the change? Google works closely with Samsung, maybe the South Koreans can deliver better. It should also make sense to buy as much camera hardware as possible from one company because the software processing is more standardized.
Pixel cell phone with new camera sensor: A previously unknown device
It’s unusual for Google to integrate a very new camera sensor. But another smartphone has appeared which has added quite new sensors with Sony IMX712 and Sony IMX787. Kuba, the leaker, suspects is just an experimental device for the future and not the Pixel 7 Ultra or anything like that.
Pixel Tablet and Pixel Notepad
For its own Pixel tablets, Google likely uses twice the 8-megapixel sensor. This is known from the front camera of Google Pixel 6. While it saves money and is good enough for video telephony, the Pixel tablet probably won’t be able to do much more in the camera area.
Several camera sensors are listed for the Pixel Notepad. Including the Pixel 6’s main sensor, the Pixel 6’s ultra-wide-angle sensor, and the Pixel 6’s front-facing camera. But no one really knows what’s going on in Pixel Notepad.
