When we talk about smartphone design, we often say and hear things like, “Design is thematic”, “Design is a personal choice”, and so on. Yes, design is polarizing. The LEDs on the back of the device can beam in different patterns and sync with different sounds. It is like a steroid notification system, vibrating for incoming calls, messages, app alerts and much more. I especially like the neat charging progress bar (pictured) that glows under the back cover. The whole thing can be illuminated at once to act as a fill light for the camera. And thanks to Nothing’s community-led approach, the interface will remain open to create more custom effects for people. That would be interesting.
Honestly, this is the most innovative thing I’ve seen in a short time in smartphone design. The Phone 1 not only gives us a peek under its hood, it also has some fun features associated with its unique design. Unlike Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Explorer version, which took on clarity but instead gave us a bunch of fake circuitry on the back, nothing made an eye-catching yet functional rear cover.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not ruling out OEM and their design choices for all other smartphones. Well-known brands make phones that appeal to a wide range of markets, and in doing so, they have to play it safe with more or less their choice. This means equipping the phone with a few cameras on the back, a large display on the front and a variety of color options.

However, nothing is a startup and entering a solid market. The global chip shortage is very real, resulting in launch delays, potential product cancellations and component prices. Nothing in an overflowing market with options faces an uphill battle. On top of that, the Phone 1 is not expected to be a flagship killer like the early OnePlus phones, although Carl Pay is behind it.
So what will a new company do in such an environment? Making another average phone is certainly not the answer. It will be lost in a sea of identical slabs. Nothing’s the best bet to illuminate through the monotony of experimenting with industrial design. This is the only thing the firm can rely on to make a difference, especially given that there is not much for it in the Nothing Launcher at the moment.
The design may not appeal to everyone, but there is nothing to worry about.
Even if you believe that the back cover setup of the Phone 1 is a glorious gimmick, it’s still a trick. The company may be hyping the phone extra and its design may not appeal to everyone, but don’t worry too much about it. Nothing is new and, for example, the ability to paint out of line. There won’t be a big production run to start with the Phone 1, so it’s not like the firm will have dead inventory on hand if the design doesn’t find a lot of fans. It is capable of noticing a specific niche, just as Pay’s first venture, the OnePlus, came back in the day.
For OnePlus, it was Cyanogen OS. The first phone was shipped with a commercial version of CyanogenMod – the most popular community-advanced custom ROM of the time. Not only did it attract loyal fans of the software, but it also appealed to people who prefer a clean, stock-like aesthetic. The gleaming and transparent design of the Nothing Phone 1 follows the same recipe – they do it with hardware instead of software.
As you can see, Pay has a uniquely designed theme for a broader ecosystem.
Add to that the fact that Nothing Phone 1 appreciates the company’s first product design – the Year 1 Bud – and you can see that Pay has a theme in mind for a broader ecosystem. Tying it with a bow is now nothing to do. Recent rumors indicate that the Phone 1 will feature a Snapdragon 700-series chipset. This automatically puts it in the pool of low-power phones. Of course, Qualcomm’s mid-range chips offer a wide range of 5G capabilities and enough power for everyday needs – the Pixel 5 is a prime example of a good Snapdragon 700 series device – but they lack the processing speed and camera skills that only flagship SoCs can offer. . No other space for the Phone 1 has been leaked so far, but the picture being painted isn’t something we’ve seen before.

So getting that design right, making sure it works as intended, and making sure the phone’s battery isn’t severely damaged is something we hopefully didn’t pay close attention to. Because it could be the only and biggest pan in the game. For now, I like what I see, and many of our readers who voted on our poll above.
