Gloomy mood in the Google fan camp before the market launch? Pixel 8 Pro reveals new performance along with weaknesses.
Anyone interested in the Pixel 8 (Pro) as the third-generation Tensor chipset is now available should prepare for mixed feelings. The not particularly powerful Exynos platform now shows at least a gap to the (old) competition in benchmarks ahead of its market launch on October 4th.
The Pixel 7 Pro scored around 1,400 (single) to 3,400 (multi) points on the famous Geekbench. Just a few months later, new top models such as the Galaxy S23 series appeared with performance data ranging from 1,800 to 4,900 points. The gap was huge, even slightly bigger than the Xiaomi 13 (Pro).
The Pixel 8 Pro’s performance is up, but not significantly
Can Google reduce this gap at least in 2023? It looks a bit like this because the Pixel 8 Pro now emerged with a score of exactly 1,760 to 4,442 points. It at least gives you a taste of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 from 2022, but not much more.
The Pixel 8 Pro is relatively mediocre
Here’s a comparison of Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 vs Nothing Phone (2):
Telephone | single-score | Multi-score |
Google Pixel 7 Pro | 1407 | 3384 |
Nothing Phone (2) | 1739 | 3983 |
Google Pixel 8 Pro | 1760 | 4442 |
Samsung Galaxy S23 | 1849 | 4886 |
Xiaomi 13 | 1708 | 5071 |
I’ll put it this way: the Pixel 8 Pro won’t be able to deliver the absolute best performance, even if it’s 200 euros more expensive. Fortunately, this is not attractive to so many users, as I will briefly explain below.
What is clear, however, is that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (Xiaomi 14 and Co.) will widen the gap again. But the Tensor G3’s GPU performance and cooling system are more interesting to me. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 had issues with overheating and thus issues.
To clarify: Google also uses an Exynos base from Samsung for the Tensor G3, which is known to have a poor reputation. In this case it’s the Exynos 2300, which Samsung only uses in its cheaper Galaxy S23 Fan Edition. However, this is not a good sign for performance-hungry users.
