When from software Alden Ring Launched in February, it took the gaming world by storm. Bringing together fans of previous games from new players, Alden Ring Has provided one of the most streamlined, accessible experiences the team has created What’s more, for the first time in Game From, it was wrapped in a beautiful, wide open world that was requested to be explored. The game was a huge hit just outside the gate, with millions of players trying to sit on top of Alden Throne.
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Hidetaka Miyazaki, a longtime software director who has been instrumental in bringing games. He gave us some insight into how Alden Ring Was designed, which bosses were his favorites and how to deal with nightmare fingerprints.
Xbox Wire: How designed for an open world has changed your creative process from your previous games?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: In terms of overall game design, a sense of accomplishment is a theme that retains the Dark Souls and the like. At the same time, we focus on a “sense of adventure” that allows players to engage with this vast world, with its many unknowns and threats, as well as their freedom.
From an actual production standpoint, the game has become much bigger than what we’ve created before, so you could say that the responsibilities assigned to staff other than me were much greater this time around.
To put it another way, there are now a lot of workers here who have grown up and gained experience over the years, and so much can be assigned to them that there was a reason why we decided to build the Alden Ring.
Xbox Wire: What was the thinking behind the Ashes of War system? Was it designed with flexibility of mind?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: Flexibility was certainly part of it. We wanted to emphasize giving players more freedom in different ways and the Battle Ashes presents a link to a series of such efforts.
The goal was to increase the level of freedom in the context of strengthening your weapons and to customize them in your own way, and I think this feeling of weapon customization has become quite broad and fun.
Also, the Skill System itself was created with Dark Souls 3, as a way to improve the unique features of each weapon division. It incorporates the subtlety of energy needed to fight in a high fantasy world of mythology and legend, resulting in a wide range of arrogant or varied skills in the Alden Ring.
Xbox Wire: How do you design different types of ashes that you can call?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: The Spirit Ashes were originally picked from enemies, but it’s down to how they worked in the gameplay. Wherever possible during their selection and design process, we have tried to be aware of the unique qualities of each summons and what they have brought to the game.
A layer of personality was then added to it from a role-playing point of view. While this may not be true of everyone, I personally have some things to say about the role play, so it’s something I hope players can enjoy in that sense as well.
Xbox Wire: What design decisions have helped determine which boss was in a particular area of the open world?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: When we start designing an area, the setting is established from the initial stage which boss will be present in that area, especially for the chiefs.
Thus, the gameplay area of the boss character forms a basis for the design, and the boss gameplay can also be adjusted based on the map on which it is displayed.
Xbox Wire: Who is your personal favorite boss in Alden Ring?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: It’s very hard to make up my mind, but I have to say Radhan. I find him interesting as a standalone character, and I like the Radhahan festival as a situation. As well as capturing that literally festive atmosphere and sense of excitement, I think it has a lonely and oppressive feeling that you can associate with our games.
Looks like we were talking about the “Radhan Festival” idea yesterday … No one on the team took me seriously at the time! (Laughter)

Xbox Wire: Did any special open-world games serve as inspiration for your design choices in Alden Ring?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: There wasn’t a specific game served as inspiration, but we enjoyed many classic open-world games from a player’s perspective and each gave us a unique and great inspiration.
There is no end to this list of titles, but there are “The Elder Scrolls” series and “The Witcher 3”, as well as “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” as more recent examples.
Xbox Wire: Is there a way to make Spider Hand enemies disappear? Whenever I close my eyes I see them …
Hidetaka Miyazaki: What can I say for that … I’m really sorry … FingerCripper is actually one of my favorite designs …
I think a conscious effort to make them disappear is going to have an adverse effect. If you want to overcome your trauma, you need to focus on them directly, never look away when you hit them. Maybe it will work …?
Xbox Wire: Did Alden Ring’s Hit Status Affect You?
Hidetaka Miyazaki: As a member of the production team, the fact that so many people are playing the Alden Ring has brought me a lot of joy, and it has been a great surprise.
Speaking for ourselves and on behalf of everyone from FromSoftware, we as game developers have always felt extremely fortunate, and this time has really brought that feeling home.
I’m not sure if you’d call it a mental state, but our position on game production didn’t really matter.
So far, we’ve created games that we enjoy ourselves, and I never imagined that this would change.
We will continue to create new, fun games like this. I believe this is the best way to express our joy and appreciation to the players.
