While at Polaris-Con 2023 in Hamburg, I had the opportunity to play Super Mario Bros. Wonder with a colleague. time to try Super Mario Bros. Wonder It quickly became clear that Nintendo Again finding a magical balance between the beloved classic Mario feel and new, exciting elements. Together with a colleague, I immersed myself in the colorful and lively world of Mario, where I took on the role of Luigi and my colleague played the role of Yoshi.
Badge system
Right from the start we encountered an exciting innovation: before each level, players can choose a badge that grants a special ability or bonus to the level. And the best part? Each player can choose a different badge. When I chose the “parachute cap” that gave Luigi the ability to soar into the sky. Yoshi, known for his natural frailty, was able to withstand most of the dangers, but was knocked out of the game by falling or being crushed. Unfortunately, we haven’t tested whether Yoshi can use badge abilities, so it will be interesting to see how this mechanic is implemented in the final version of the game.
We had a hilarious surprise when I got to ride with Luigi on Yoshi’s back. Although the control was with my colleague, it led to some funny and unexpected situations during our race.
Neue Power Up
The first level greets us with the Elephant Mushroom, one of the many new power-ups the game offers. By eating the mushroom, my Luigi turned into a powerful elephant that can overpower enemies and destroy blocks with its trunk. Although Yoshi couldn’t pick up power-ups, touching them moved them into a reserve that other players could access.
Later in the game we encountered another power-up, the “Drill Mushroom”, which allows characters to drill into the ground and even reach the ceiling. Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Diverse overworld
In die overworld Super Mario Bros. Wonder A loving blend of the linear level structure of classic Mario games and the more open, explorable areas we know from Super Mario 3D World. This allows for a pleasant transition between targeted level progression and free exploration, adding another dimension to the gaming experience.
Fresh art style and attractive animations
A particular highlight was definitely the game’s new art style. Super Mario Bros. Wonder presents itself in a visually impressive, artistically fresh look that lets the familiar Mario world shine in a new light. The animations are fluid and charming, with an attention to detail that makes every movement of the characters and interaction with the environment a real feast for the eyes. The colorful presentation and interesting animations add significantly to the overall experience and make the Mario universe feel more alive than ever.
Our conclusion
Super Mario Bros. Wonder has exceeded our expectations and promises to be another jewel in Nintendo’s crown. New gameplay elements combined with nostalgic Mario environments have us eagerly awaiting the official release on October 20th.
