Apple plans to begin its push into generative AI by offloading complex queries to the M2 Ultra chips running in data centers before moving to the more advanced M4 chips.
Bloomberg Report Apple plans to put the M2 Ultra on a cloud server to run more complex AI queries while processing simpler tasks on devices. The Wall Street Journal I previously reported that Apple wanted to create custom chips for use in data centers to ensure security and privacy in a project the publication called “Project ACDC” or “Apple Chips in the Data Center.” However, the company now assumes that its current processors already have adequate security and data protection components.
The chips will be used in Apple’s data centers and eventually in third-party servers. Apple operates its own servers across the US and develops… New center in Waukee, Iowawhich was first announced in 2017.
While Apple hasn’t moved to generative AI as quickly as competitors like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, the company has explored the technology. In December, Apple’s machine learning research team released MLX, a machine learning framework that allows AI models to run efficiently on Apple processors. The company has released more research into AI models that give clues about what AI might look like on its devices and how existing products like Siri might get an upgrade.
Apple focused heavily on AI performance when it announced its new M4 chip, saying its new neural engine is an “extremely powerful AI chip.”
