James Cameron criticizes DC and Marvel characters

Director James Cameron is excited for the upcoming release of Avatar: The Path of Water, as it is a long-awaited sequel set more than 10 years ago. And occasionally he’s asked for his opinion on today’s blockbuster productions, especially with Marvel and DC movies, with a comment that’s not entirely complacent. Specifically, he noted that the characters that appear in these films act as if they were in college, without any concerns or elements that would make them grow as individuals. By this he is fully implying that they will have an identity problem, at the same time that they are not that deep, but on the contrary it is a film for the entire family. Here’s his comment: When I watch these big, spectacular movies, I see you, Marvel and DC, no matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They are related, but they really aren’t. They hang up their spurs for their children. That thing really grounds us and gives us strength, love, and purpose? These characters don’t feel it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies. Superheroes in general have always seemed a bit fanciful to me, and I wanted to do something that was more along the lines of Terminators and Aliens, that bought directly into reality. So you’re in a real world, you’re not in some mythical Gotham City. Or Superman and the Daily Planet and all that kind of stuff, where it’s always very metaphorical and feels like a fairy tale. I wanted it to be: it’s New York. snowfall A boy is bitten by a spider. He becomes this kid with these powers and he has this fantasy of being Spider-Man, and he builds this suit and it’s terrible, and then he has to upgrade the suit, and his big problem is the damn suit. That kind of thing. I wanted to ground it in reality and ground it in universal human experience. I think it would have made a fun movie.
