It’s been a good year because one thing is certain: LG is withdrawing from the smartphone market. I have worked for the previous twelve months on an article. You may remember that there was a special smartphone at the end of this journey.
In fact, it should have hit the market, but then the plug was surprisingly pulled: the LG Rollable. The smartphone with the retractable screen never left the prototype status. A recently released video on YouTube shows the device with an unusual form factor.
Of course, the product display is not particularly exciting. After touching an icon at the edge of the screen, the display automatically extends to the right – so there doesn’t seem to be a hardware button for it. Unfortunately, the video does not show the exact dimensions before and after the extension. According to previous rumors, however, it will grow from 6.8 inches to 7.4 inches diagonally, and the resolution will increase from 2,428 x 1,080 pixels to 2,428 x 1,600 pixels.
Oppo had a “Rollable”.
LG wasn’t the only manufacturer to experiment with such concepts. Oppo had a similar smartphone in the workshop at the same time. However, the fact that the Oppo X 2021 never went on sale suggests that the LG Rollable won’t be a lifesaver for South Koreans.
As far as alternative smartphone designs are concerned, foldables are now dominated – above all by Samsung – and I don’t think rollables can represent serious competition. What do you all mean?
