This week has been pretty heavy on Xbox, as not too long ago they confirmed the closure of four development studios, with the most critical of the decision being Arcane Austin and Tango GameworksAnd that’s something that the community didn’t take well, especially as they went against the company’s executives, mainly Phil Spencer. And now, it has been pointed out that perhaps these decisions no longer come from the video game brand, but from higher up, that is, Microsoft Gaming.
One of the most important journalists of the media IGN created some conclusions or doubts about what is going on at the company, adding that you can talk directly with Phil Spencer when the video space Xbox in Summer Game Fest. And a pretty interesting phrase came up in some of his conversations with brand veterans who for one reason or another no longer work there, and the phrase that stood out was “It’s not Xbox anymore, it’s Microsoft Gaming.”
Here’s what the elders had to say:
I’ve had long conversations with a handful of Xbox founders, and we’ve all come to the same conclusion: It’s not Xbox anymore, it’s Microsoft Gaming. There is too much surface area. You effectively have three giant companies and Microsoft never completed the integration with Bethesda and Activision is three times bigger than Xbox. The Xbox 360 launched with just a few hundred. Last I heard Xbox is now around 30,000 people.
Xbox’s situation was very different when it tried to acquire Activision. They may not have consoles in stock, they made money from Game Pass growth. The acquisition seemed like a piece of cake. Now console sales are down, a post-Covid slump. Game Pass is slowing down. The acquisition took a lot longer than expected, and it probably cost them time to focus on fighting the FTC that they could have been thinking about people and studios.
All this is complemented by the fact that they are no longer a single individual’s decision, but rather something collective that must be implemented by the senior management of the company in question, ensuring that it cannot be just Phil Spencer who is in charge of saying which studies go in and which come out. who It will be a long process where now he is the one who is sent as the executioner, but in the end he does not say that he must eliminate certain divisions.

Author’s Note: Things have gotten pretty tough with what’s going on at the company, many developers should fear that their game won’t be successful and the problem is that there won’t be many people who will buy it at full price for it. The mere existence of Game Pass.
