Hand-soldered pieces of technological history
The prototype bore the name “Apple Computer A” and is considered to be the product with which the legendary story of the Apple Group began. Despite its poor condition, its expected value is half a million dollars. Whether this figure can be reached at the auction remains to be seen.
Apple Computer was a successful demonstration model
In 1976, Steve Jobs presented this prototype to Paul Terrell, owner of The Bite Shop. He then bought 50 copies of the Apple i computer and The Byte Shop became the first store to sell Apple computers. Retail price at the time was $666.66.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak personally soldered the prototype together. This can be seen in the condition of the soldering points, which resulted in the formation of bubbles as a result of his special technique: while soldering, Wozniak held the wire and soldering iron in one hand and the solder in his mouth with the other.
Historically valuable, but no longer for its creators
Apple Computer A sat in the famous garage where Apple started for years before Jobs handed it over to its current owner nearly 30 years ago. He had just left Apple to found Next Computer. Apple bought the company a few years later and so Jobs returned to Apple.
The condition of the mainboard is not particularly good: a part is missing from the board, and several components that were originally installed are no longer available. This is probably due to the fact that Steve Jobs was always striving to improve his products and therefore repeatedly removed parts from Apple Computer A and installed them elsewhere over time.
Experts confirmed the authenticity of the prototype using Polaroid photos. The motherboard is now being auctioned at auction house RR Auctions, and you can still bid until August 18. On July 22, bids were around $230,000, with Arabic Auctions expecting up to $500,000.
